The practice of Reiki (pronounced ray-key) originated in Japan with Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s. He is said to have received the abiltity to heal and also the symbols still used today to initiate new students when he was on a 21-day fast on Mt. Kurama near Kyoto. Reiki healing has always been designed for the common person and the methods of teaching should remain simple. There were actually several other forms of “hands on” healing that started then, such as Johrei, but Reiki has spread now worldwide. While some practitioners have combined Reiki with other healing and spiritual modalities, there is a group in Japan and another in Australia that keeps to the “pure Reiki”.
In this article, Reiki Healing for Dogs: Online Jewels, I’ll describe four very good organizations that specialize in Reiki healing for dogs. Each one is unique and has some amazingly beneficial insights and practices. All have strong online websites.
Shelter Animal Reiki Association (SARA), a non-profit organization, was formed by Kathleen Prasad in California to help rescue and shelter animals, especially dogs. It now supports other shelters, sanctuaries and animal caregivers as well. There are educational programs offered online, such as the Animal Reiki Practitioner Certificate, for shelter caregivers, veterinarians, and all animal lovers. Kathleen has two popular books in print, the Animal Reiki Handbook, and Reiki for Dogs: Using Spiritual Energy to Heal and Vitalize Man’s Best Friend. Here is what she says about treating animals with Reiki.
When doing Reiki on an animal, it is best to treat from several feet away and allow the animal to come forward to receive hands-on treatment only if he or she is open to it. Many animals will actually place certain body parts into the hands of the practitioner to show where they need healing the most. Other animals will simply lie down several feet away and fall into a deep “Reiki nap”.
Because animal Reiki treatments are not dependent upon physical contact for success, they are ideal for use with shelter animals. Animals who are fearful, skittish, abused or aggressive are ideal candidates for Reiki from a distance. Practitioners can offer Reiki quite successfully whether physical contact is used or not

The second organization, The Happy Dog Spot by Diana Laverdure is also based in the US.
She points out that Reiki is beneficial for all animals in every condition: 1) healthy animals (relaxation, peace and contentment), 2) sick animals (safe complement to Western Medicine, Chinese Medicine and homeopathy, reduced drug side effects, enhances flower essences) and 3) dying animals (reduces pain and fear, eases transition to death).

“Reiki complements veterinary treatments and helps speed up post operative recovery as well as helping with long term conditions like arthritis”. Sarah Probert, Owner and Head Vet, Bridgnorth Veterinary Centre
Reiki is a bit like having a good friend who is there for their comfort. Dogs respond very well to Reiki healing – they seem to sense that humans are helping them. Your pet is highly likely to be the same.
During Reiki healing sessions dogs usually become calm and relaxed – leading the way for us humans to follow! It is quite unusual to find a dog that doesn’t welcome Reiki energy.
Reiki healing is suitable for domestic pets and professionally bred animals and so some hands-on Reiki could help your animal whether it is your beloved companion or if you work with animals and you are a professional breeder.
Reiki has become a hugely important part of my life. My vision is to share the wonderful self-healing benefits of Reiki, with as many as possible across the world. However, no matter where you are in the world I can send Reiki Distance Healing to you, your loved ones and friends, and to your pets.
Last but not least is a great site, Reiki Care by James French, also in the UK. James points out that Reiki is beneficial to help dogs overcome behavioral problems and to speed recovery from physical as well as emotional problems. James has created a 3-part program: 1) animal communication training, 2) Reiki Healing and 3) The Trust Technique.
Don’t miss on this website: video and course information for the Trust Technique. I assure you this 3 minute video will blow you away or at least re-arrange what you think is possible for animal healing. Just watching the Trust Technique video is a relaxing experience. You may wonder how you could make use of these sites for your dog. Most of them will be located far from your home. However, all of them offer distant healing if contacted. In addition, all of them provide complete and easy to follow training that often can be downloaded in a few minutes. I have provided links to the websites and books within this article. If you find or know about other good organizations doing Reiki healing for dogs, please write and let me know. All comments are welcome for this Reiki Healing for Dogs: Online Jewels.
